Category Setup

So I’m setting up my first store with EE1.7 and FOXEE 10 (Latest Version) and I have a few questions on how to setup my categories.  Scenario:

- 3 Product Lines
- Each Product I want searchable by (Application, Wattage Range, Product Line)
- Some products are related by a range of wattages so I would like to show related products based off of an attribute.

So my thought is to create 3 categories under weblog management under a category group named “products.”  Then I create a field group called “products” and add the necessary fields I want to capture for each product and/or want the ability to search by.  Connect the field group to a weblog.

My question is, there are category groups in Foxy cart and there are custom fields in the FOXEE module in EE.  Should I use those instead of using EE to setup my products, assuming my solution above in EE is correct?

Any advice and/or help/limitations on doing it one way or the other would be greatly apprecitated.  Thank you.

I would probably set it up like this (remember that this doesn’t rely on the foxee module, this is all through EE)

1. Create a weblog for each product line
2. Create EE category set for Applications
3. Create a new EE category set for Wattage
4. Use standard EE tags and Parameters to display your products the way you want.

The foxee custom fields are for product specific details, Foxycart categories would only be required if you need to separate products for coupons, shipping or taxes.

I’ll try it out and update with my results.  I’m sure I will have questions once I get going.  Thanks for the response.

What about FoxEE fields like Product Code, Price, and Weight.  I capture that data for my products.  Should I leave those out of my custome fields in EE and use the ones under the FoxEE tab or ignore the FoxEE fields and create EE custom fields for those also?

foxee fields should be used only if you want to effect the price or pass information through the payment processor. Like size or color so it shows on the receipt and order detail
